THATHGARU

Sri Lakkaraju Ananta Rama Rao, the author of this work Valmeeki Ramayana A Commentary, was born in 1911 in Kathevaram near Tenali in Guntur District in the state of Andhra Pradesh. He graduated from AC College, Guntur and obtained his Law Degree from Benares Hindu University. Hailing from a pious and well-read family, provided the impetus to him to reverently study Classical Indian and Western Literature.

His rendition of the commentary on the section of Sundar Kanda distils his feelings for both Lord Rama and that of Sri Hanuman and reaches in the section of Sundar Kanda a pinnacle of his emotions of love and reverence. This work of the author which is his life work so to say is itself a testimony that this literary giant did not care for his personal glory.

His readings were diverse, and his literary knowledge was indeed commendable. He was immensely fond of English Literature. The current work depicts his knowledge of the works of the writers of the Victorian and the Elizabethan times intertwined with his commentary on the epic of Ramayana. The author approached this work with great devotion, for the character of Sri Lord Rama.

It took several decades for him to complete this felicitous text, yet he was unable to publish it during his lifetime. Perhaps the 91 years sojourn of this Yogi was too brief to do so. It is fortunate that it is now made available to the world and is given its rightful place in the literary and spiritual world, hopefully as a masterpiece as a second edition with stupendous efforts of his grandchildren.
